Best Bit: Ground Control have lost contact with Major Tom. We cross back to Major Tom, now all alone out in space – “Here am I floating round my tin can …”
60s
Johnny Cash – A Boy Named Sue
Johnny Cash had a sharp wit. In this clip he comes across as much like a comedian (a good one) than a country/rock singer.
Jimi Hendrix – Purple Haze
Never listened to very much Hendrix but as someone who likes to respect the musical forefathers of my fave acts, I feel I should. Of the tracks I know, this is still number 1 for me.
Jefferson Airplane – White Rabbit
Great 60’s hippy tune.
Kenny Rogers and the First Edition – Just Dropped In (Cover)
I could have found a proper video, but the truth is whenever I hear this song I always think of this scene in The Big Lebowski anyway. I actually didn’t know who performed it until now – I just knew it as that trippy song from the movie. Good to know that Ol’ Kenny did some good work before settling into the fried chicken game but apparently it’s not his original. The Wiki says that it was a Mickie Newbury song first recorded by Teddy Hill and the Southern Soul. The Mickie Newbury version somehow reminds me of Alice in Chains.
The Turtles – Happy Together
Featuring this because …
1) It’s a brilliant pop song
2) It reminds me of an even more brilliant film (Adaptation)
3) It was played at a wedding I went to recently
4) That horn player
The Foundations – Build Me Up Buttercup
What a song!
Wife seemed a bit down this morning so I cranked this song up. She was resistant at first but eventually it worked it’s magical powers and she was grinning.
My ridiculous dancing may have helped too.
The Beatles – Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
A Beatles song that I didn’t have a lot of respect for until I played it as a DJ at a party and everyone loved it. Now I really enjoy it. Apparently it was voted Worst Song Ever in a 2004 poll though.
I guess not enough people had heard Figured You Out by Nickelback then.
Aretha Franklin – Respect
Does this song need an introduction? Probably not.
Jeff Beck – Hi Ho Silver Lining
I bought a Jeff Beck compilation CD after hearing others make such a fuss about his work as a guitarist. I haven’t found myself getting into it much though, and strangely I think my favourite song is this one – the only one where he sings and the guitar work takes a backseat (though someone else had to sing the choruses, because Jeff isn’t the world’s best singer).
